I'm a lover of the Dune world which was the only thing that kept me staying with this book. It seems each new novel gets more and more ponderous with little forward movement of the plot. The belabored explanations of each faction's motives drove me crazy. After the 5th time the character narrative explained the Butlerian hatred of computers and the need to wipe them out, I almost ditched the book in the trash. But I stayed in there yet had no reward at the end.

Will never match the writing style of the original author. But these are great stories. I always appreciate this universe being fleshed out more and more.
I am a avid fan and decided to go back and read the dune series in chronological order. I wanted to see where characters, old and new ended up. The writing is somewhat disappointing, rewriting historical events as seen from of view of the character. However it gets tedious, I found myself skipping whole paragraphs.
A well written sci-fi worthy of Dune. Good description of the setup following the turmoil after breaking the thinking machines rule. However if you have followed the complete Dune series you might have already got use to the parallel story telling and you might not be so easily surprised. Nevertheless good description and analysis of the human nature regarding fanatism.
If you enjoyed the original Dune series or the books written by his son and Kevin Anderson, you'll also enjoy the Mentats of Dune, which basically depicts what happens after the Jihad against the machines is over. The book is a bit slow, but picks up in action toward the latter half of the book. I enjoyed it enough to keep reading and would recommend it to anyone else.
I just finished book 2 of the schools of Dune series Mentants of Dune. I gave it five stars because I was intrigued and fascinated by the character Erasmus and his return. I also liked reading about the history of the Harckonnens and Valya how she became the mother superior . It is good to know that the authors put in how sisterhood used the voice the first time . I do recommend this series for those who are Dune fans and hoping the authors keep the saga going .
I'm giving this two stars because some of the (many) plot lines are interesting and creative. But this book, like the other McDune series (thanks to whoever coined that apt moniker), is terribly written. There are two major problems.

(1) There are far to many plot lines, and so the narrative just moves ahead by fits and starts and never coheres, and things get very difficult to follow. Just when things start to move and acquire some energy, the authors jump to another one of the plot lines.

(2) The amount repetition in this book is mind-numbing. Herbert and Anderson apparently are unable to just start in on a narrative without a lot of redundant background information we've already had many times before. Really, if all the repetitive background crap were deleted, the book would be half the size that it is. Just one example. Using my search, I can report that the reader is informed that Dr. Ptolemy is haunted by the sounds of Dr. Elchan's screams on nine separate occasions. Like we didn't get it the first time or second time. This sort of thing is persistent throughout the book. Apparently, Herbert and Anderson think their readers are attention-deficit morons who can't retain important information from chapter to chapter without being prompted.

Oh, by the way, did I mention that Dr. Ptolemy is haunted by the memory of Dr. Elchan's screams? Just wanted to be sure you remembered...

No, really. Dr. Elchan was screaming and Dr. Ptolemy heard the screams and he is haunted by them.
Mentats of Dune continues the Schools of Dune series by following the formation of several of the institutions that played significant roles in the known universe. The Butlerian Jihad against most technology is in full swing, causing havoc and setting back progress with ramifications that will last millennia. The schools, in the meantime, struggle to grow and weather the terrible storm of destructive hysteria that is particularly dangerous to the early Mentat facility which, while striving to teach logic and mental discipline to its human students, holds a very inhuman origin. More backstory filler that bridges the prequel Legends of Dune trilogy with the original series, it's worthwhile reading for fans of Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's contributions and, perhaps, others who really wondered about the overall setting of Dune.
