Enjoyed reading this book as I started homeschooling. What a great perspective it gave as I battled within about how I desired to approach teaching my four children! Learning more about the history of how people learned and understanding that schools came about mainly for the poor, whereas privileged children learned at home primarily, by their mothers and then by tutors later was fascinating to me. Also, the fact that reading (usually from the Bible) was the primary source of knowledge and experience until the last century and then later math would be introduced was also comforting and helped me approach our educational path with greater confidence and simplicity and with more faith! It was truly inspiring! My kids learned more in the first semester than they would've otherwise in 3 years! It was mainly because it was interest based and navigated as more questions arose, while principles were introduced and discussed as they came up. Very impressive to learn how lifelong love of learning makes everything interesting and connected. Learning this way allowed our lessons to build on one another and we're contextual to other concepts they're learning and pertinent to their personal lives. Great read!

Fantastic book! Made lots of highlights and notes. Seriously a game changer. If you aren't satisfied with modern education, this is a must read. Also a great read for homeschoolers (though not exclusively for homeschoolers)!
I really appreciated this book for so many reasons. I found it very helpful in the way DeMille describes classic education and how to achieve it. My confidence level has increased as I educate my children from home.
A great resource for all homeschooling families or families who want to improve their children's public school education. This book offers many ideas for how to provide your child(ren) an excellent, individualized, leadership education. I'd recommend buying all of the TJEd books.
This book changed my life. It opened my eyes and altered my view on education. It is the only book, aside from religious books, that I felt ring truth to my soul as I read it. It is a must read for every person, but especially parents. It wasn't a hard read because it was so engaging.
This book has changed my life. I have read it several times and each time have gained from it. My children are better educated because I read this book; it changed why I teach my own children and how I teach them, too.
Nothing fancy here, just a call to improve education by throwing the responsibility to the kids to get into the classics, aided by a good mentor. The author says that we won't improve education through fancy programs, curriculum, text books, and funding. We need an education like the great people who came before. This kind of education is whole lacking in America. As a home educator and one concerned about nationalization of education (sure, that will fix everything), I'm glad I read this and got some good takeaways, I think the author has (re)discovered a secret here. Honestly, the core concepts could fit on about 5 pages, but he does a good job without too much redundancy. I'd recommend it.
This book is a life changer. Be prepared to rethink everything you assumed about education (especially if you are a public school graduate). This book inspired me as an adult to pursue my own education, to be brave enough to let my kids fall in love with learning in their own way and time, to educate my kids the way great leaders and thinkers have always been educated (until the last 150 years). You won't ever look at education the same way again!
